¿Qué es la descompresión en buceo y por qué importa?

What is decompression in diving and why does it matter?

BY NAMUBAK

When you start learning about the underwater world, it's normal to ask yourself: What is decompression diving? And although the term sounds technical, the idea is quite simple. In this blog, we explain it clearly, without any surprises or complications, so you can continue diving with confidence.

What is decompression in diving?

Decompression is the process your body goes through to release the nitrogen you absorbed while diving. This nitrogen is in the air you breathe (a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen), and because it's under pressure at the bottom of the sea, it dissolves into your tissues.

When you ascend, that gas has to come out little by little . If you ascend too quickly, the nitrogen turns into bubbles inside your body—like when you shake a soda bottle and open it suddenly.

This can cause problems like dizziness, pain, or, in extreme cases, injury. This is called decompression sickness . But don't worry: it's completely preventable.

How do you avoid decompression?

Diving safely is very easy if you follow a few simple rules:

  • I climbed slowly and without haste
  • Make a safety stop 5 meters away for 3 minutes before leaving
  • Plan your dive according to depth and time
  • Use a dive computer (or let your instructor guide you)

In Namubak courses, this is learned from day one. You'll always be accompanied by professionals who follow safe protocols.

Is it a risk for beginners?

No. In courses like PADI Open Water Diver , you don't exceed the limits where there's a risk of decompression. All dives are within what are called "no-decompression limits," and you don't need to make mandatory stops beyond the safety stop.

Plus, you're never alone . You always dive with an instructor or guide who monitors the time, depth, and your ascent. Even so, this practice is routinely included in the course to acclimatize divers.

Why is it important to understand decompression in diving?

Because diving is a powerful experience, and the more you understand how your body works underwater, the calmer, more aware, and safer you feel .

Knowing what decompression diving is isn't something to be afraid of: it's so you can enjoy every dive to the fullest, with respect and knowledge.
