Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente: Un Llamado al Cambio

World Environment Day: A Call for Change

BY NAMUBAK

Every June 5th, the world unites to celebrate World Environment Day , a date that invites us to reflect, take action, and protect the natural resources that sustain life. Since 1973, this day has grown to become the largest global platform for environmental awareness.

In 2025, under the slogan “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the United Nations-led campaign is calling for collective action. South Korea will host this global initiative, which aims to mobilize citizens, businesses, and governments around real and sustainable solutions.

Why do we celebrate World Environment Day?

The date was officially established in 1972, during the Stockholm Conference, as a response to accelerating environmental degradation. It marked the beginning of a collective awareness that recognized that what affects the environment inevitably affects us all.

World Environment Day today represents a space for unity to face the triple planetary crisis : climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution.

2025: A key year to eliminate plastic pollution

This year, the campaign focuses on one of the most visible challenges: the invasion of plastic into our ecosystems. It is estimated that more than 11 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans every year. At Namubak, we believe that it's not just about reducing, but about fundamentally transforming how we consume and produce.

Our products — such as recycled hats or yoga sets made from recycled fishing nets — are a way of showing that it is possible to dress with purpose and sustainability.

What are the challenges we still face?

Despite progress, the planet continues to face major environmental challenges. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), serious issues remain unresolved:

  • Unplanned urbanization — as occurs in gentrification processes in Costa Rica , where disorderly growth impacts both communities and ecosystems.
  • Unsustainable production and consumption models
  • Sociopolitical conflicts that hinder climate action
  • Degradation of natural habitats and loss of species

Citizen Action and the Environment: Signs of Real Hope

In the face of the global challenges presented by World Environment Day, a powerful force also emerges: a more aware, informed, and committed citizenry.

More and more people are choosing decisions that take care of the planet: from consuming local products and reducing single-use plastic, to choosing clean energy or adopting habits such as sustainable mobility and mindful eating.

At Namubak, we celebrate with action.

We're joining this day with more than just words. Through our ecotourism experiences and our partnership with The Clean Wave , we promote coastal cleanups, coral restoration, and environmentally focused diving certifications. It's our way of giving back to the planet a little of all it gives us.

The Earth doesn't need a day. It needs commitment.

World Environment Day is a reminder, but real change is built in community. At Namubak, we believe that a more conscious life begins with small choices. And if we make them together, the impact is limitless.
